The Way We Weren’t

By Phoebe Fox

Starting over

I could see myself in the main character, Marcie. In her head, excusing the actions in her past of letting go of dreams, acquiescing to others’ ideas of how to live her life, a slow erosion of her own identity year after year.

A last straw impels Marcie to get on the highway and keep driving until she lands on a beach in Florida. The cast of characters she meets—especially an older man who literally picks her up—charts a course for Marcie to discover what she wants, who she is.

Loved it.
