The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper

By Phaedra Patrick

When you discover your late wife had a secret…

I was fooled by this book’s sleepy start, not recognizing that its simplicity is by design, for when the story begins, the protagonist has been lulled to dullness.

It’s the story of a widower who thought he had a predictable routined life when he discovers his late wife had a secret. And this secret points to questions that frighten him…did she ever really love?

Quaking, he begins a journey of following up clue after clue to try to discover an answer. The quiet book ultimately is populated with nutty characters, wild tigers, well-meaning street philosophers and more.

In the end, the story asks questions about living a life of regret. The journey leads to healing and renewal. Not bad for a slower start!
